It is finished! An interview with Perry Stoneby Becky Leidy, Daily Peloton International Cycling News
Published: 01/09/2003Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, January 9, 2003 - IT’S FINISHED! There was a small crowd of 15 or so people anxiously awaiting the arrival of Canadian Ultra-cyclist, Perry Stone at Russell’s Cycle Inn in Rockhampton, Queensland. The man, who was just completing 14,187 kms around the perimeter of Australia, rolled in at 6:10 pm on January 9th, Queensland time. The mood was exuberant with many cars honking as he came in, escorted by friends Kay, Keith and Dave, who were with him over the last 40 kms. Perry was described by Dats Bikes owner, Dave Arnold, as "shagged" >From his start on November 13th at 9 am to the finish, the race length is 57 days, 9 hours and 10 minutes, a new record for an unsupported Race Around Australia.
Becky Leidy: How does it feel to be finished?
Perry Stone: I’m numb. That’s a good way to describe it. I’m numb.
Becky Leidy: What were those final miles like?
Perry Stone: Well, I ran out of water, so I was on empty coming in. But before that, in our last conversation, [40 km out] I was just rockin’. And then…. Well, it’s no big deal. It’s over with. That’s for sure. I just realized that I haven’t had a shower since Sydney. It’s going to be so great to have one.
Becky Leidy: If you could pick one thing that plagued you during this race, what would it be?
Perry Stone: Headwinds, definitely.
Becky Leidy: What will the next few days for you be like?
Perry Stone: They will be really great. I’ll shower and sleep. I’ll get up tomorrow and be happy. I’ll be heading to my bar, a seaside bar. I call it "The Strand." I’ll sit there and drink VB’s and tell my war stories for the next couple of days. And, by next Tuesday, I’ll be working on whatever is next in this insane life of mine.
Becky Leidy: And what is next?
Perry Stone: I don’t know yet. I’ve got to decide. Something challenging, I’m afraid. (laughs)
Becky Leidy: Should I bring up the 4-letter word?
Perry Stone: Which is?
Becky Leidy: RAAM.
Perry Stone: Oh, RAAM is a possibility. I’ll have to shop around and find a proper sponsor. These things are too hard to do for the enjoyment. You have to make a living out of it. That’s my opinion, now. You put your life into these rides, you know. I think I’ve proven myself. If someone has something they want to showcase, they can hire me like everyone else gets hired who has a job.
Becky Leidy: Are there any memories of this lap that stand out in your mind?
Perry Stone: Oh yeah! All the people I met. They were so friendly, enthusiastic and supportive. The people of Australia were just unbelievable. It was really the "glue" for the whole trip. Yes, definitely the people…
